In the era of the internet media is the most common way we interact with the world. We have seemingly infinite ways to interact with others and get information from the palm of our hands. Where previously we would only have a few news channels, we now get to see everything going on in the world as it happens. This ease of access to entertainment, communication, and information has led many of us to be online an unhealthy amount. Due to me never wanting to be bored I fill any downtime with social media to the point that I never relax without my phone in my hand.
Many studies have shown a link between mental health and heavy use of social media. As humans, we tend to measure ourselves up to others and when everyone's photos are curated to make them seem perfect it can give you the wrong idea about everyone else.
Another negative to the ease of access to news and media is the desensitization of tragic events to the point that it seems normal. It seems like every other week there is a shooting, and every day we get updates from the war in Ukraine that has displaced millions from their homes and killed thousands. Becoming desensitized is a step towards acceptance which we cannot allow to happen.
I believe that social media can be great when used correctly, but when it's abused it could affect you negatively. We could all use a break every once in a while.
